My computer used to be much faster and now i have been experiencing a slowness in the speed of my entire computer. Just opening and closing programs seems to take longer than it used to, how do I speed up My computer?

This is a common question with a few quick ideas to pass along. When you go out and grab a new complete or put a new case together you start off with a fresh OS, partition, and possibly a few startup softwares along with the video and sound. Over time as new programs are added and files are moved and saved and deleted as well the drive becomes fragmented to some degree.

With the Windows system tools like the drive defragmenter you allow Windows to reorganizer the hard drive for faster and smoother access. When you use this on a regular basis your system runs smoother. The second usual cause for slowdowns is the amount of things that load along with Windows are now greater in number. Fortunately someone at MS had the sense to put in the msconfig utility where you can reduce any unimportant items from being started up at boot time. Simply type in msconfig at the Run prompt to see a new screen come up and go to the last tab on the right hand side. That is the listings of installed softwares that load with Windows. Uncheck any non essential items and restart the system.

Now as far as internet speed slowdown there is often your ISP's servers that are now getting a larger volume of traffic. This is also seen with sites you pay visits to in any regular time frame. Don't you hate the extra wait right when you need to get to some page fast. More users then usual.

Have you installed any new programs? have you checked for adware? viruses? If you aren't using particular programs, delete them, or make sure they aren't on the startup.

First off, if you dont have any... go to:
www.download.com
or check the Stickies.

Search for a free ANTIVIRUS, ANTISPYWARE, REGISTRY CLEANER, and possibly a FIREWALL.

First, run Disk Clean Up. Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools
Second, open up your browser and clear the HISTORY, COOKIES, and CACHE.
Third, if you want, open up your "My Computer." Right click on your C: drive and click properties. Go to "TOOLS" and find the "Error-Checking" opetion and click on "check errors." You will probably have to reboot.

Then, install the programs you choose if you haven't had any or done already.
Let each one of them run. Preferably the Antivirus, Antispyware, then the Registry Cleaner last. Let if fix the things it finds.

Then, run Disk Defragmentor. Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools.

Lastly, if you want, install your firewall if you choose to download one and protect yourself from future threats. Then you can go into Start>Run>"msconfig" w/o quotes.

Click on the "Start Up" tab. Expand the "Command" column.
Uncheck anything that you find you haven't installed and looks suspicious. If you are unsure of it, check with them online.

i have the same problem my internet has gotten really slow and my computer has gotten a little slower. i have done all that you have said before and do them weekly. is there anything else i can do.

Click on the "Start Up" tab. Expand the "Command" column.
