internet speeds

Hey everybody, I just got done reformatting my dad's computer with XP Pro. He wanted me to format it. Anyways, while I was downloading stuff like avg, itunes, etc..., I noticed the speed it was downloading at was around 1mb for some and around 100kb for others. Why does it vary so much? Before I formatted, it is usually around 200kb. How is it that I reach speeds of 1mb? Is it because I just reinstalled Windows? Overtime will the speed slowly decrease and why?

Also, we have Insight Broadband 10.0 cable internet and the speed is supposed to be 10mb. What does that number mean?

it has nothing to do with the format.

if you live in southern california there's a lot of maintenance with the phone lines causing slowdowns and in my case no sync.

otherwise do a speed test and check your network status. i use dsl extreme and on their home page there's a network status telling you if there's a slowdown.

if all else fails reset your modem. that may speed things up by re-syncing
