Internet works, but browsers don't. Help

I need help and can't afford to lose my computer for several days in the repair shop. Issue is my browsers (explorer, firefox or google) don't work on my desktop. Message is "cannot display webpage". However, it is connected as I can still retrieve my email through outlook. Sometimes I am able to get on the internet after resetting the computer, but the connection lasts for about ten minutes and then dies. My laptop works fine; it goes through the same router only it's wireless. I've ran AVG, adaware and spybot. They cleaned up some stuff but the problem is still the same. They have not been updated in about a month, but will not connect to update. Additionally, system restore has been turned off and it will not allow me to reenable it. I did not turn it off so I am suspecting I have some type of virus. Problem is I can't find it. Any help would be appriciated. I've look all over for others with this problem but have not been able to locate anyone. I have also tried reinstalling firefox. Reseting defaults on IE. Running in safe mode with networking. None of these work.

Ok, open a help page (e.g. Start > Help and Support), right click the help icon in the top left corner and then click "Jump to URL". Type in, for example www.google.com and see if it works.

...assuming that you're using XP.

OMG! finally! some1 who has the same problem as me. anyway, i dont think its a virus since even hijackthis didnt find anything on my com. im guessing its because of XP itself. the reason being i have the same problem on my old computer which was also runnin on XP.
