just something I've been wondering. Can a virus or spyware or anything else in this category slow down internet speed?

Often a slowdown seen can be the result of heavy traffic on your ISP's own servers or many have simultaneously logged onto a specific site. Your system can be totally free of any infection and still see slowdowns at times. Viruses and other types of infections can cause a number of problems with all things related to Windows including Internet Explorer. They can not slowdown your ISP's service however just play havoc your own system.

k, I didn't think so, but thought I'd ask. it's just that the last week it's been really slow, and it used to be fairly decent. when I first moved here and hooked the net up( a month and a half ago) it was running incredibly fast, then all of a sudden I lost it out of the blue, and it hasn't been the same since.

The actual connection speed is not what would be effected by any malware or virus. That is determined by hardware not software. Anything like a virus will impede Windows and other programs and data on the drive. But it has no ability to change a 56K modem into a 14.4K model. It would more likely make it impossible to even get online by corrupting data needed for configuring the connection.
