Internet

When installing cable Internet, what exactly is the line up (where does the router and such come in)? Here's my understanding (I'm not good with networking):
From the DSL to the house, the cable connects to a card inside the computer. From that, the cable then goes to a router. From there the signal continues to all of the other computers in the network.
Is that in anyway correct?

Do you have DSL or CABLE ?
No that is not correct. I have seen a DSL / MODEM pci card, kind of doubt you have that in this day and age. If you have DSL and it is not fiber, or FIOS.

check again where the wires go

Wall -> Modem -> Router -> Computer(s)

The cable coming from the wall is plugged into the Modem.
The Modem and Router are connected together.
Any computers you have are plugged into the Router

Hope that make sense.

does that work the same with satellite internet

wall->modem->first computer->router->other computers

Depends how you want to control the internet, but usually all the computer are plugged into one router. So no that is not correct.

so its more like: (?)

wall->modem+router --> 1st computer
--------------------\_> 2nd computer....

i really dont think im getting this.
-no one compuoter will be an admistrator
-i just want to connect two computers to the line
-from the wall, what exactly do i need to do?

munkyeetr couldn't have made it much simpler. there are multiple ports on the router which wires to each of the computers hence you have a network.

It can be done by connecting the router to the PC, but I dont know why you would do it, because whenever that PC is off, no one else will get internet.

Basically it goes Modem > Router > PC's.

what kind of modem shall i get for a satellite internet connection?

Are there modem/router combos?

You can't just pick up a random modem, you need one that is compatible with your ISP. I would ask them what modems work work with their service, and then go from there.
