Introduction and Motherboard upgrade question

First of all, hello. I am new to this forum and will introduce myself as SteveThePirate. Yargh, how ye all be?
I have never thought about this until I read about it in my A+ book.
My first question is this:
[How would I upgrade my motherboard via software? From what I understand, you can update a motherboard and it will(or perhaps might) work with certain other items such as a new processor working on an older motherboard?

Do you mean flash BIOS?
Later BIOS version of Mobo may allow the mobo to run new cpu...

your motherboard manufacturers website might have a program that will update the bios and also should have updates for the various other components like onboard LAN, audio etc. Do a google search on your motherboard and find its specifications to find out if this "newer" processor will work with your motherboard. The motherboard and cpu having the same socket type is the key.
