inverter or backlight issue?

Toshiba Tecra A8,

Screen dark, obviously either backlight or inverter faulty as external monitor works fine when plugged into VGA socket.

If I rapidly press the F5 key(which controls the internal/external monitor) then the screen will flicker and stay on a few seconds and after a few minutes of this then it seems to stay on (I'm guessing it's warmed up??) .

Does this sound like a faulty inverter as I'm suspecting or is the backlight to blame? If I had a spare backlight to test then I would (as they're pretty universal with only two varying connectors I've ever seen). I'm willing to throw a few quid at this laptop to get it back up and running normally :D

Our guess is as good as yours but it sounds like the inverter is most likely since you can actually get the fluro to fire up.
