Ip address from a post

Hi everyone,

I often hear people talking about getting someones ip addy from a forum post. How do they do this, for example can anyone tell what my ip address just from this post :confused:
 
If you post on a moderated board, the moderator can see your IP address as well as the administrators.

The admins use the IP address to keep spammers and delinquents from ruining this forum.
 
My IP goes through a server cache thing So If anybody else in the same area as me went onto this site they would have the same IP right? I dont understand what this server cache thing is
 
no they wont .have the same ip...ur IP gets given to u when u Either Connect to the Net or Reset your modem ...everyone has a different ip

yes, but my internet goes through an ntl cache, so on most websites where it says it logs your ip or tells you what yoour ip is, they mostly come up with the cache and not my actual ip.

how can it be a lie, ive done seen it myself, other forums have had my ip logged wrong

Doesnt really matter either way. The intention of a Mod or Admin being able to see your IP is to check that you havent created more than one account on the same system. And to also block the IP if need be.
 
Are you men talking about your LAN IP (internal IP) and your Internet IP (external IP)? Those will be different, but for a (some) networked computer, the external IP would be the same for each computer on the network.
 
Some companies didvide their service area up into devisions and then each persons external IP address STARTS the same but then varies at the end. For example the strood area (where i live) has got the prefix of 86.132.xxx.xxx they then range from 86.132.0.1 to 86.132.255.255.

Internal ip addresses usually start wit 192.168.xxx.xxx or 127.0.xxx.xxx.
