IP address shown in forum

I didn't know where else to place this question...I hope someone can help me.

I frequent a message board where a person likes to show his "prowess" by revealing people's IP addresses. He is not an administrator, but almost on a daily basis he uses the access log from the forum to show IP addresses, and then display where we live.

How is this possible? How does someone without admin rights able to show your IP address? I am concerned that my IP address plastered on this forum will create a security risk. He mentioned I have "gaping holes" in my security.

It's not in your security, it's the forum's security. Those guys should be beaten for allowing a non-admin member access to the logs like that. He can do that to anyone and you're not really at risk if you're using an ISP with a dynamically assigned IP.

That forum is just wide open, and that guy is a jerk. Who does stuff like that? Tell that cat to get a girlfriend, prostitute, significant other, life, etc.
 
Very true, and finding the geographic location for IP addresses is not very hard at all, in fact there is a plug-in for Firefox that will do it for any webpage that you are at.
 
Thanks for answering so quickly! Unfortunately, I was using my work computer at the time. I work in DC, but my company's proxy server is listed as near Boston Mass. I'm pretty sure my IP address stays the same. He kept bragging about my "gaping" holes in Internet Explorer; I think he is arrogant/stupid enough to try something.

Yeah....if he wants to try some stuff, tell him that your IP is 127.0.0.1

127.0.0.1 is the default IP for a localhost machine. So he'll be striking his own machine.

You have no 'gaping' holes and that immature idiot would most definitely not find them. If he tries something he is most likely to receive a letter from his ISP. If he does anything it will likely be a weak DoS attack and that's the easiest type of attack to trace. So, the way I see it, time will tell how big of an idiot this guy is.

This sounds like a wannabe hacker trying to show off some simple knowledge he figured out by using Google. Just ignore him. Most people like this are at worst, simply annoying. The 127.0.0.1 idea can be entertaining if the guy doesn't have a head on his shoulders. :) Ahh...the old "go home" joke...

Besides, your external/public IP address is one of the more open and easily discovered pieces of information regarding your computer. Since you are most likely on a company wide private network accessing the internet through a gateway, the chances are that the guy has no clue what specific machine address you are at, let alone how to find that out.
 
Things like that should not be allowed to be open or left so that by standers can read others IP's !
If i was you people, id report it to the Admins and keep complaining.
