IP Conflicts.

What is the best way for my computers to stop conflicting on the IP addresses? Is it to freeze the MACs of the machines on the router, manually assign them to the pcs? If I let DHCP handle it, the ip addresses start at x.x.x.14 instead of x.x.x.2 where they should.

My setup is:

Router (Standard ISP one) (Wireless) |-- My Laptop - Network Bridge -|
.................................................. |.... Raspberry Pi --Ethernet-----|
.................................................. |....PS2 ----------Ethernet-----|
....................................................|....Server (not used) --Ditto----|
................................................... |--- My Netbook.........................|
....................................................|-- Mums PC - Ethernet ---------|
....................................................|-- Dads PC
.................................................. |-- Mobile Phones and Handheld Devices

Let the router handle all IP address assignments. Thats the best and easiest way. And there should be a setting in the router where you can tell it start at what IP address for assigning them.

yes, try to let the router handle the DCHP and there should be a option in the router to set the starting and ending ip address'

Does it matter where your automatically assigned addresses start?

If it does and you want to use static ips, the only thing you can do to prevent conflicts is don't enter the same ip for 2 machines :P

Regardless of what IP they start at you should not be getting IP conflicts unless one of the following is true.

1. The 'Server' you mention has DHCP enabled.
2. Some of your devices are static IP Addresses in the same range as the DHCP pool.

Keep DHCP on but make sure you change the IP Address range. Then change it so they start where you want them to.

Yes it sounds like one or more computers have a static ip address. Just check them and make sure they all obtain ip addresses automatically .

I had a few problems with my various gear wanting the same IP's so I just choose to manually assign an IP to each device and I do so when ever I add new gear to my network it saves you loads of trouble if you manually assign each unit a specific IP.
