IP Connection

Hey guys,

So my cousin has a wireless webcam down in North Carolina and I am trying to connect to it from New York. I figured if he just gave me the ip address of the webcam I would be able to type it in and connect to it, but no such luck. We know that we can host it on a website or something and set up a live feed this way but we want to try and connect just by using the ip address (like a direct connect). We also tried to do this just to his computer (not the webcam) and couldn't figure that out either. Is there any way to do this without using the remote desktop client or whatever? As in - just connect to a computer or webcam via the internet? Thanks a lot!

Are you sure you're giving him the correct IP? If you on a router, then you might have given him the local IP address of what your router gave you.

Hey,

Yeah he is on a router down there. What number should he give me? Like under ipconfig for instance, what should he be looking for to give me? Slash how can i connect to the camera if its behind a router? Do I just need to get the ip adress of the camera or something and type it in? Thanks in advanced!

haha, no that won't work, that IP is probably something like 192.168.1.8 right? You would need to have his external IP, and then you would need to get the correct port that the webcam is using.

Port 80 is for web browsing, why would he use that for the cam?

Web cams usually have a web interface, you could try 443 but some don't support https

Alright,

So if i get his external IP, how do I connect to his computer (or webcam) by just knowing that information?

I have his external IP address and I type it in like you said, without the ":2704" because we haven't not figured out the camera's port yet but nothing still happens. I type that into my internet address bar and nothing loads.

You need to enable port forwarding. Most likely you will have to be at the house to change the settings on the router

Also, nothing should load unless your modem is configured for remote web access, because when you try to open a page at his external IP's address there is nothing running for you to see in a browser. Did you try pinging that IP?

No,

I didnt try pinging the ip but thats a good idea. How do I set up the router for remote web access? Just by signing onto the router? Is one of the menu options remote web access?

Well for me it's an option on the modem, I don't believe the router I have supports it. I would first try pinging his external IP and see if you can contact it. But yes, there should be an option under the administrative tools panel.
