iphone 3gs unlocked?

first off i'm not asking how to unlock the phone.

i just bought an iphone 3gs "factory unlocked' from ebay. before doing anything i tried using my tmobile sim card but i get:

The sim card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported. Only compatible sim cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iphone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported carreier's store to receive a replacement SIM card.

there's also an image of itunes.... it probably wants me to connect to it first. i did and i get the same message. i can't do anything other than turning it on/off.

question is.... is my phone really factory unlocked? it came in the original packaging and all. is there a way to check if it's factory unlocked?

what's the first step to using the phone? am i supposed to connect it to itunes and download the latest firmware (haven't done this step yet). should the phone work without connecting it to itunes?

thanks

The moment you connect to the internet and update it will become supportive for the network that it was meant to be with, e.g. AT&T in US, or O2 in UK. have not really heard of unlocked iphones, unless you do it by installing 3rd party software, but as i said if you update it through i tunes it would cancel any 3rd party installed OS suppliment and make it locked again. actually in Russia they do sell them factory unlocked but then i think they would only work in Russia. So few question where is the seller of the iphone, i.e. China or what?,
Then when i got mine, i got it from the apple store so they did everything, but what they did was indeed take it out of the box, activate it through itunes, then register it with your network, in my case it was O2. those are the steps. Did your iphone come with a sim card?

This thread is old ;) in the UK, you can get iPhone 4 on T-mobile, orange, O2 (still) Vodafone, and now 3!:D
