What should I do?

Last week, I dropped my iPhone and busted the screen. I've posted the pic below, lol. Fortunately, I purchased the phone with my AMEX gold card. With that card, I have a purchase protection plan and they credited back the full cost of the phone plus tax, so I didn't lose any money. A local shop will replace the screen for $120. My wife's friend used this shop and her phone looks brand new. So I have a few options:

- Have the shop replace the screen for $120

- Get an out-of warranty replacement from Apple for $199 plus tax. It's a 16GB 3GS

- Repair the screen myself.

Before I make a decision, I wanted to know if anyone here has replaced their screen and if it would be cheaper to do myself. I've googled it and it seems like it would be better to pay the shop to handle the replacement. I can't seem to find cheap replacement screens online. Even if I find a cheap screen, I'm afraid I'll eff up my phone and end up having to buy a new one anyway. lol. My phone is only four months old and, with exception to the screen, still in good shape, so I want to avoid buying a new one.

I say pay the shop. The screens probably will be half the amount of what the shop will charge (Maybe more, I'm not sure how expenisive the screens run for, but it's an Apple product, and the word 'cheap price' isn't in their vocabulary). And like you said, you run the risk of damaging it yourself. I've seen people take these things apart, and it's tricky :P
And besides, if you try to replace it your self, and you buy the screen, something goes wrong and you break it, you have to buy a new one, so you're out the money you paid for the screen.

Buy a new phone, sell this one on ebay for $100-150. Someone else will fix it and feel like they got a good deal on it, you'll walk away with $100-150 in your pocket and a brand new phone.

Yeah, that's another idea. I sent a private message to PohTayToez, a member here at CF. He likes to buy, fix, and sell this type of stuff. Maybe he'll take it off my hands.

I vote get a new phone. You could have damaged something more then the screen when you dropped it.

That's possible. Everything seems to be working fine though. In fact, I'm still using it. All the touch functionality works as it did before I dropped it. It wasn't a hard drop either. It slipped out of my hands onto my granite counter top. Prolly like a one foot drop, if that.

Wow only a foot and it did that to the screen. I have dropped my iPod touch from 5 feet up and not got so much as a scratch on it.

Well I guess I have bad luck. My wife threw away her iPhone, so I guess I'm doing better than her. lol. True story. She was cleaning out her car, had the phone on the top of the trash and threw it in our bin. I took the trash out the next day, the garbage guy dumps it, then she tells me she threw her phone in the bin. lmao. That happened a couple weeks ago.

I threw my iPod away once but then I was looking for it and remembered I threw it in the trash.

Really if you know that there is nothing wrong with the phone then you should get the screen replaced.

Yup, she was about two hours too late. The guy dumped it around 7AM and she woke up around 9 and remembered. It sucks. I'm gonna get her a new one for Christmas, a 3GS. Or maybe a should buy a new one, repair this one and give it to her? I dunno. At least I have some options.

That must have been the start of a bad day for her.

Yep you could just get a new one then have that one fixed later on. That would be a good idea if you didn't mind spending the extra cash.

Man, I would cry! I don't think I could get by without my iPhone anymore. Sad but true. :D

Repair the screen. Ive done it before(do it for friends all the time for whatever the screen costs), lemme get a link to the ebay seller ive bought from:http://cgi.ebay.com/IPHONE-3G-TOUCH...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item518d4b2c6f

That looks to me more like just the glass itself broken, the actual LCD screen is under the glass.

Could also try this, also a power seller with over 7k feedback:
http://cgi.ebay.com/IPHONE-3G-REPLA...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item3351d2742a

If you need any help repairing it just toss me a PM, ive been fixing ipods since they were still greyscale screens.

Oh man. So have I! I've dropped mine countless times from about 4-5 feet and it works like a charm ;) Those things can be durable as heck.

That's right, it's just the glass. I suppose I should distinguish between the two. This glass from ebay is as good as what ships with the itouch and iphone? $30 is a good price. I'll take a look at some tutorials and youtube videos.
