I used to have an iPhone (until I lost it 
) and it was great, but I wasn't the one paying the bill for it. I think with the release of the 3G iPhone the standard service charge has actually increased so whatever you save with the cheaper $199.99 price tag, you give back in monthly payments. Regardless it's an amazing piece of equipment. I think we'd need to know the age of your daughter in order to make a recommendation, as many of the iPhones features won't be used by a younger child.

What generic smart phone do you mean? I know BlackBerry has a new phone coming out that looks awesome, but other than that I don't think other smart phones even come close to the simplicity and usability of an iPhone (not to mention it's sleek looks), which is why she probably wants one in the first place.

On what grounds is it over rated?
It's a great device that does a lot, offers a lot of expansion through the app store or jail breaking, and it just works.
I've used mine for almost a year know and have never had any major problems. I have an original and I know the 3G versions have had some reception issues (in the states at least) but it's a great phone.
I have a unlimited family messenging plan and data is unlimited.
Yeah, the 3G reception got MUCH better. It was the providers fault because of the horde of people who the iPhone the 3G signal became weak. They had to make the connections from the cell towers stronger and now it is really good, I am at between 3-5 bars on 3G everywhere and in SOME places, I get down to edge, but that is in my school, it's supposed to be a dead zone in that area but some phones get reception. PLEASE go and get it for her. But make sure she jailbreaks it, I am still not bored of mine, it is out almost all day, in my hand or in my friends hand (tap tap revenge)

If she is around 15-18, I would make sure she knows that any overcharges from texting, internet, or anything else comes out of her pocket. It's really easy to go overboard with a smartphone.

She is 12 going on 35.
Using it mostly for pics,music and camera.
Not worried about her going overboard on it from a Texting and Internet usage..AT@T has some great family tools available that I can use.
Both her and my 18 year old son has the internet and texting turned off.No matter what buttons they push on the phone,no text or internet is getting in the phone or out of the phone.I have to change it either online or by calling AT@t.
The issue I cannot seem to resolve is with the I phone can I allow the phone to Wi FI use only but still block it from getting on the internet via the AT@T single use plan.

I suggest get at least 60 mb a month if you can because the iPhone is a data heavy phone and without the data your bill will be raised some, if you don't want to get internet on a phone and just want the other features (- touch screen) then get a different phone for her. It is good for internet, apps, checking e-mail, calling, texting and downloading. Or just get a cheaper phone + an iPod touch

I agree, the iphone is cool because of its data features if your not going to enable those then why bother even having one?
unless you are on ATT anyways, I wouldn't go to them. I personally have the Samsung Instinct via sprint. It's nice and the plans are attractive. The wife and I share 1500 minutes, unlimited data (internet/text/picture mail) for $99. as compared to my dad who has my 2 younger brothers on the plan, all 3 have Iphones, similar plan (minutes the unlimted text, they only have 200) and pay $150...
if money's not an issue, go for it. but if you aren't going to allow data on the phone, its pretty worthless. go for an iPod touch for her then, all the power of the iPhone, minus the annoying ATT plan. that way she will have wifi but you will never have to pay a data charge for her phone.
the iPhone is a nice phone, and it is not overrated. I have had mine for a while and I still use it every five minutes. I was away this weekend and my friends and I watched some movies on it, played a few games, listen to music, took pictures and made a few calls, and we also did other things non tech related 
But yeah, the iPhone is awesome, but no data should mean no iPhone to me. There is no point in having it like the others said, and if she wants an application then she will need to wait to go home to get it and stuff like that, it just takes the convenience of the iPhone away
