Ipod and computer file format compatability

Hi
Ipods I do not know anything about
We want to get our kids a couple that play movies
We are assuming that they can take the movies from the home computer and download them into the Ipods
Is this correct?
Will the format be able to play on the Ipod?
 
You will need to encode them into a format that the iPod can play.

For this you will need a encoder like- Videora

What format are the movies in at the moment?
 
I am sorry I do not know what format they are.
They are the movies we have at hove DVD
We can put them movies into the Ipod and they can watch them in the car on trips or when ever.
I look on the cover of a dvd and all I can see is "DVD Video Duel Layer Format"
