ipod hard drive problems

I have a 4th generation ipod (black and white screen, the one that came out before the ipod photo) that appears to have a hard drive issue, although i do not get any warnings like the sad face that indicate the ipod needs repair. I plug it into the usb on my computer and I am able to download 2037 songs (about half of the disk's capacity) to it before it starts making loud clicking sounds and eventually disconnects itself from the PC. I turn it on and the menus work fine, but it doesn't recognize any music. It just shows around 9gb of "other" data. However, as long as I stop putting music on before I reach the halfway point on the disk, everything works normally. I have tried to format it with windows and with Eraser 5.1, but both fail in the middle of their task. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Have you shook or jiggled the iPod a lot (or at all)? What it sounds like is that the HDD of the iPod was scratched and is preventing the proper formatting of the hard drive by the computer as well as the songs from being transferred. If you run with your iPod a lot it may be better to get a mini or some other version that is flash memory instead of a small physical HDD.

Sounds like a failed hard drive... I'm not sure if there's much you can do besides replace it. Does it still make the loud click noises?

I do agree with DCIScouts. If you get another one, go with a flash based one. such devices are typically much more stable. Not to say they are problem free, but much less likely to fail than a hard drive based device.
