Is 2GB Enough For Gaming?

I was wondering whether 2GB of RAM is enough for heavy gaming... Crysis, GTA IV, Far Cry 2 and other games...

what's your opinion? I was debating on getting another 2x1gb kit for my rig.

ok, with heavy gaming, i only have crysis warhead so i will only speak for that. But when i had 2 gigs, it was alright, but mainly because my video card, but when i switched to 4gigs, i got a gain of 5fps, which is pretty darn good for just upgrading the ram...

When i had 2 gigs playing crysis, it went up to 1900mb of ram used

So for heavy gaming i would definatly recommend 4 gigs, but 2 gigs will do just fine...

I would go 4 gigs though, while ddr2 is still someone cheap:good:

For heavy gaming you should have more then 2GB. If it was just some light gaming I would say it is okay, but with games like GTA4 and Crysis. You should be working on getting and extra 2GB's.

4Gb seems to be the norm today in most systems.but since the i7 release alot more systems,even pre-built ones are comming with 6-8gb,even if theyre not gaming systems.

mmm apparently games like Microsoft flight simulator are big memory hog so for games like that you would need more. But yeah some games need more of hardware than other. GTA IV is a big processor hog, MFS needs a lot of RAM, crysis needs everything ^^

Yeah FSX takes up about 25% of my RAM.

But 4Gb should do you good. I wouldn't last on 2Gb of RAM, cause most days my RAM is at 50%, which is 2Gb...and I don't even game, except FSX

It depends on your OS, for Windows XP 2GB is lots but if you are running x64 Vista or 7 then you may make use of more.

RAM is relatively cheap now so manufacturers throw in a lot more and charge you $100 extra.

for just gaming, 2gb is enough. i'm a numbers guy, so here's some numbers:

average improvement in fps for games is 1.6%, with crysis having the most performance increase at 7.9%.

there was also another test by corsair, but the link is broken. it basically said that when running 4gb, you can switch tasks faster than with 2gb. meaning, if you're running a game and alt-tab to say a mp3 player or word doc, you can come back to your game faster.
go with 4gb, if you can get it cheap.

I have been using Vista Ultimate x64 and after disabling half the memory hogs / services I never use I have never passed 2.4GB so with the price of DDR2 I would get 2x2GB sticks.

Games like GTAIV have a tweak where it will use all the memory you can throw in your machine to try and help.

What most say is
Vista = 4GB
7 = 6GB

As to why I have no clue but if I had to guess most using 7 would have a I5 / I7 (which tri SLI = 6)

Actually, right now, 2x2Gigs of DDR2 is about the same price as 2x2Gigs of DDR3.

I'm not sure what you mean by your last sentence.

I'd say so for older games and if your not running Vista. I personally would run 4GB - minimum 3GB.
