Is a Firewire still necessary for DV transfer?

Hi
My old 2001 comuter is about to die, and I need to replace it. However, every new config that i see on sale does not include a firewire. In one shop i was told that the the current USB2s are powerful enough to transfer Digital Video from a DV camera to the computer. Is that true? When I bought my current computer, firewire was the only way to do it and I bought and added the firewire card in about 2003.
Has technology really moved on that much? :confused:can i really use a USB 2 cable to transfer a Gigabite of DV at a time from my camera to a new computer?
Thanks guys, I'd really appreciate the advice before buying the new computer and paying extra to have a firewire fitted.

so Firewire is still better than the newest USBs

Thanks for your reply, but I have not bought the computer yet.

The problem is that if i buy a new computer from a store already configured, it is not so easy to open it and have a firewire added. I have to know first that the computer will have a space on the motherboard to put a firewire card. And that is not the kind of info you find easily. And then, if I open such a computer I void the guarantee. :(

My original question stemmed from the fact that all the new MultiMedia computers being sold at places like Carrefour and Cora don't have firewire, I am starting to believe that firewire is no longer the industry standard for importing DV from a DV camera.:confused:

Am I right or wrong? does anybody know if i will really regret buying a computer without a firewire?
thank you :confused::confused:

thanks

Opening the case to add a firewire card should not void the warranty at all. Most, if not all computers sold today should have at least 1 or 2 open pci slots for a firewire card. If you are that worried then you can always build your own system which would be cheaper and you could put your own parts in it.

I'm pretty sure if you have a DV tape camera than firewire is the only way to transfer. If new computers do not have firewire ports, you can always buy a firewire PCI add on card.
