Is a Linksys WAP54G compatible with a Linksys WRTP54G?

I have a Linksys WRTP54G Wireless Router with 2 VoIP phone ports setup in my house now. I want to get an AP so that I can get onto the wireless I have setup from the router in other parts of the house.

I am just wondering, do the Linksys WAP54G wireless access point and the above mentioned router work well together?

Thanks

any router and ap will work together. no router encrypts its data so it can only be used by one ap. any way if they do. linksys would not block its own ap

That will work fine, but if you can find another router for less, you may want to consider it. A router that can run DD-WRT can be setup in "AP" mode. Seeing as routers tend to cost less than most AP's, this might save you a few bucks...

YES DD-WRT! but remember. you can mess up your router if you dont know what yoor doing. with dd-wrt and the new linksys boxes some have to be "unlocked" you can easely brick (distroy) your router if you dont use it correctly. (my self is included in distroying one :D)... but you dont need dd-wrt to have it be a ap. if your get a router do not connect it to the internet port. it will not work. you have to connect it to port 1-4. but set it up first to your internet first.

ap cost more because they r worth it they have more features than a router like the linksys ones theres four different ways you can run them.
1.access point, runs the same as a wireless router

2.access point client, enables you to use the ap as a wireless adapter, like a wireless card in your computer.

3. wireless repeater, no cord needed, uses an existing wireless signal and repeats it, as in another room in your house to get a better signal upstairs

4. wireless bridge, like you have a older non wireless capable desktop that is up stairs, you take two Ap (routers will not work in this mode) and you have one that on one end of a work place and the other ap is on the other side of the work place the two basically act as an invisible eithernet cord from one end to the other, (in this mode the ap do not allow wireless clients)

as for running a different firmware not doing it before and not knowing enough about it, i would screw it up and i dont feel like blowing another fifty bucks to get a new router.

Access points do NOT have more features than a router. Many won't work without a router. And again, when you load DD-WRT, you get all the features you'd typically have with an access point AND a router.
