Is a new motherboard my best option?

I'm using premiere pro cs4 to edit HD footage but it requires at least 2.8 ghz processor speed. I only have 2.13 and editing the footage is way too sluggish.

So I bought a new processor, but apparently it's not compatible with my motherboard even though it has the LGA775 socket (after I installed it the cpu would turn on but with no display on the monitors and with a really loud fan noise).

I'm on a dell xps 410 (with win7 and this graphics card) and there is a bios update available, but after looking into the flashing process a bit I'm afraid to try it. Plus I really doubt it would fix the processor-incompatibility problem.

So I'm thinking I should just get a new motherboard (for under $50 or so). Do you have any recommendations? Can I just email intel and ask for one that's compatible with my dell and that processor/graphics card?

Or should I not get the new mobo and try something else?

Big thanks for any advice. :)

You basically would need a new system as you wouldn't be able to put a standard motherboard into a dell case. Even if it would fit and case connections work out your version of windows wouldn't be able to be reactivated. So you are better off getting a new system at this point I think.

^^^this. A new board/processor. You only have DDR2 memory, if you get a updated board you will need DDR3 memory. Plus your OEM OS will freak out. lol So buying a new OS too. Would be better off saving up and building a new system.

Ah ok, so no go on the mobo. I really don't need a new computer other than for the HD video editing, so I'm probably just gonna have to use my roommates rig for now.

Thanks a lot for your help guys. :good:

Or I could buy a different processor but I'm afraid it won't work either. And getting my money back for these things by return/resale looks impossible/difficult. But that's a different topic!
