Is a router firewall enough?

Nearly everything I read says to install firewall software before connecting your newly built PC to the internet. I was wondering if a firewall through a router is good enough, or is it necessary to use software? Is there anything software does that a router firewall doesn't?

Thanks,
John

No, all a firewall in a router does is block ports and a little bit of other things.
Also a software firewall is still not 100% gooe eather. The bast is to have a hardwire firewall at the front of your internet and then your router. that is the best...

Can you explain that a little more? I thought a hardware firewall was basically having your router connected...is there more to it than that? I see in my configurations where I can enable and disable the firewall on my router, but what do you mean by having the firewall "at the front", and then the router?

the firewall on the router is just a cheep port blocker. a better one scans all trafic and looks for viruses, adaware, spam, intrusion... A good hardware firewall can stop much more then a normal router firewall

A hardware firewall is a router firewall, as in built into a hardware device. And as far as I know, they aren't cheap. They usually sport NAT, SPI, SSH, VPN, etc, they're not short on security features. And they're generally better than software firewall, if only because the router intermediary.

A software firewall is not really needed when you have a hardware one, I don't think they're capable of "stacking".

Agreed, a hardware/router firewall is normally plenty. Many say to install a software firewall also for extra measures as thay do not conflict with one another. But usually just the Windows built in firewall is enough on top of the router firewall. I have my Windows firewall on just for kicks......
