i only bought one for a custom computer but i hear a second one is recommended for some system recovery thing..is it worth it?..

also do motherboards have a network or u gota buy that ? Ex. cable dsl ethernet port

some motherboards have a DSL/Cable port, it's called onboard or integrated ethernet, it the motherboard doesnt have 1 built in, you would have 2 buy a ethernet card, that goes in 1 of the PCI slots.

my build will not be equipped with a secondary hard drive....i dont think its "necessary"...you can manage without em easy...

to my knowledge most motherboards already come ethernet ready...

second hard drive

Hi,

I don't want to hijack this thread but I have a really quick query. I'm installing a second hard drive, but the diamondmax I ordered didn't come with any plastic securing strips that would slot it nicely into my rack (don't know the correct lingo for all this). Any ideas, or spares someone wants to sell me for a few cents?

just screw it in you rack

I can't, the screwholes don't align with anything on the rack. What about wedging it in with foam strips? How secure does it have to be?

i heard that if you have a second HD like a small 20 gb or somethign, that you can run your OS off of that and save all your other stuff to your larger one or something like that. i heard about this for people who do video editing and photoshop, which is I

Yuep! You definitly can do that! THats what i am doing now. I have my OS on a 40GB, and everything else on my one of 3 120GB hard drives

NExt time, start a new thread.
Your hard drive can just be sitting in your computer case, no problem there, unless you plan on moving you computer, then you would want to secure it, or take it out during the move.

can you install a second drive AFTER windows xp is installed?..im talking about the system recovery part....i herd u cant but im not sure..thanks

You definitly can install a hard drive after you install windows. I have done that countless numbers of times. What do you mean "system recovery part"? THe system recovery partition?

ya ima gona have my os and all my boot up stuff and one game on my 36 gig rptor for fast saving and bot up then everything else will be on my 200 gig hdd

By reading between the lines here I beleive he is referring to imaging the drive (system recovery). If that is the primary purpose then yes install a second hard drive. I have my machine configured with a second HD. The second drive contains data backup and drive image files. Use a program like Drive Image (if you can still find it) or Norton Ghost. Acronis True Image also works but I am told that there is a lot of corrupted images from this program. Do you need a second HD? No your system will run fine on one. I equate a system running on one drive as putting all of the eggs in one basket. On my system, if I have a major problem with my OS it takes 20 minutes to get the system back to full operational status. You have to remember that a HD is still a mechanical device and they run better now than they used to but are still prone to failure. If you do not have any form of backup then you have lost everything.

Hope this helps.

cheers,
I couldn't find a way to start a new thread on this website. I'm THAT computer savvy. Anyway, question answered, I'll leave now.
