i have a seagate ultra ata/100 drive that is 7200 rpm and 2mb buffer memory. I want to get another drive that is around the same size but has 16mb buffer memory and is also 7200rpm and use that as my os drive and then use the old one as a slave drive. now if i have a ata/100 does that mean that i can only get ata/100 or could i go ata/133(not really sure if there is a benifit to that)

Yup... Besides, most drives only sustain speeds of around ATA100. My Raptors get 216Mbps in the raid, so that's basically 108 per drive...

so even if i had a mobo that could handle ata-133 i would not even be useing all of the "bandwidth".

so then looking at newegg it seems that ata-100 hd only have 8mb cache and ata-133 hd can go up to 16mb cache. from reading the hd 101 thread i would like to have 16mb cache as it will be quicker to load programs, now if i only have a mobo that is ata-100 capable does that mean the 16 mb cache is not going to be fully used as well?
