i am just wondering that is ATI 9800 pro 256mb good enough or smooth enough to run many latest games i.e. Warhammer 4000, Doom3, Haf-Life 2 etc? dont worry about spec of the cumputer lets say P4 3.0 1gb RAM 120GB WD HD Abit IC7 series MoB

You can certainly run all the latest games but dont expect to be able to crank the AA/AF to the max though :)

That is the same videocard that I have, and I must say it works well enough. I play Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 and have them both set to almost the highest quality....the only reason it is not all of the way, is because I only have 768 MB of RAM.

Well Doom3 isnt dependent onthe amount of memory you have as Anand has shown us (testing 256MB to 1GB) .... but rather the video system .... so you played Doom3 @ Ultra at what resolution? ;)

No, it isn't at ultra, the setting below that, and I forget the resolution, but I will have to change that anyway as I just got a 19" monitor, which is a big change from a 15".

sorry Praetor whats "AA/AF" i am not just familiar with it :-)

so really is it actually worth buying X800 (256mb) series over 9800 256mb when it pretty much does the same job?

Antialiasing = remove jaggies
Ansiotropic Filtering = hmmm how to describe .... reduce parallax distortion

Depends on the budget and intent as the price jumps is significant. The X800 series is significantly improved over the 9800 line

You could always go for the X850.....although it would cost a lot of money, it would satisfy your gaming needs for a long while.

Granted but a few points to consider:
1. The X850 is essentially just an OCd X800
2. Of the entire X8xx line, the best deal is prolly the X800XL followed by the X800XT
3. While the X850 may satisfy you for some time, it wont hold a candle next to a 6600GT/6800GT/U in terms of potential lifespan (due to SLI)

whats improven from 9800 to X800 significantly (that u think of)
Virtually everything. The X800 is a superior card in every way (other than perhaps astehtics :P)

I guess what Praetor is trying to say is, that if you were to get the X800, you get better of everything over the 9800, but you will have to pay more....you just have to decide if that is worth it or not. If you are willing to spend the extra money, then I say go for the X800, it should please you and keep your gaming golden.

so it seems there is a rival between X850 and 6800GT/Ultra. bringing those graphic card to the absolute comparison in every possible way which "candle" will burn last long :-)

Well, I have never had any experience with nVidia, although I know that they have a very good reputation and it is usually back and forth between the two. I know that both companies are reliable though.

The Fillrate and number of Polygons Per Second, for the most part.
For the most part these measurements arent really useful anymore (last time I saw them really was circa R9700/Ti4600)
Nowadays the measuring indicators are memory bandwidth, core clock speeds and available processing pipes

Not sure what you mean by that? I dont think its any contest to say that an SLI configuration will outpower any single card you can get from nVidia or ATi for some time to come (of course we are talking well outside of the $130 budget)

Well that is something I didn't know, why are these measurements not useful any more though?
