Is building a desktop PC hard?

I'm really nervous about building my own desktop PC. :o I've never done it before, and I have a few questions before I decide whether or not to do it myself.

Do I need any cables to connect anything? :o Or does everything just plug into place? I'm sure I need SATA 2 cables because I bought hard drives and no cables were included...how would I connect them to the motherboard and power supply unit? :o

Do I need thermal paste? And what cooling parts do I need? I have no idea what case I should buy, how many fans, what kind of fans, what kind of heatsink, etc I should get. The processor I'm looking at doesn't come with a heatsink or fan off of NewEgg.

Eh please help, I'm not sure what I should do. It'd be like $100 cheaper I think to build my own than to get it built for me.

It's pretty easy. There are literally hundreds of guides out there, including a good one on this site. Cables tend to come with the mobo rather than the HDDs, it will say when you buy it whats included.

As for actually building it, it is quite obvious. You will have to try pretty hard to plug cables in the wrong places, mostly they will only fit where they are meant to go.

You will need thermal paste. Some heatsinks come with it pre-attached but this is normally cheap stuff and it's better to peel it off and use some proper stuff. The guide on CF shows you how much and how to apply it.

Whether you want loads of fans depends on what you want to do with your computer. On mine I just have the fan on the CPU heatsink and the PSU exhaust. If you are using graphics cards, lots of HDDs, overclocking, its on all day etc then it will be a good idea.

Hope that helps, Doug.

absolutely nothing to it, i built my first one about 8 months ago, its really not what i expected, just take your time with it

Fairly easy. I just built my first one in November after much nervousness and it turned out fine. Just research your parts thoroughly beforehand and take your time with assembly. And watch that static electricity!
