Is Dell good?

I had a botched computer build from Newegg.com (warped case, which fried the motherboard, which fried everything else). I'm just returning everything (at a loss, darn customer service), and I plan on buying a complete computer from a company to avoid all this stress.

I've never known anyone who has had a bad Dell experience, but some computer nerd friends of mind said Dell uses inferior parts, or too-low-wattage power supplies, or cheap motherboards, or something along those lines. Except for that, I would buy from Dell in the blink of an eye.

I'd specifically get the XPS 410 desktop, with some upgrades. Thoughts?

Thank you!

just about everything dell uses is low quality, low price parts.. but if you not going to be overclocking and modding it works just fine, and you cant beat the 24/7 support if you need it.. for someone not realy computer savvy dell is fine.. but to us nerds dell is junk, you way overpay for there higherer end systems but there is nothing wrong with there computers.. I started with a dell and it worked fine, my mom still uses a dell.

you can build a computer to compare to any dell for hundreds (thousands in the case of really high end) less than what dell charger.. but again, then you go no tech support and you have to know what your doing..

just to be sure

I'm willing to pay a bit extra to avoid the months of agony I experienced with Newegg (you know, telling me to contact every manufacturer - like 12 in all). But I still want a high quality system - I do high-res 3D animation and photo editing, and plenty of multitasking. I don't intend to overclock.

Basically my Newegg build had about the same components as Dell seems to have, in terms of speed. I'm just wondering if the specs are not everything.

Will Dell be good enough for me? Other opinions?

Thanks a lot,
Naftali

I constantly tell this story, but here it is again :P Last summer I worked at a hospital and was in charge of configuring some new machines. I was given about 10 Dell's, still new in boxes, to reload with the hospital's image. Half of the NEW systems had some sort of problem with them. Some were minor things like a loose screw in the case or a disconnected cable. Others were serious, such as a completely dead hard drive. On top of that, the cases were extreamly cheap and flimsy and the I/O ports could be bent back into the case!

Dell has VERY cheaply made computers and I wouldn't recommend them. Though I'm not sure I could really suggest any other pre-made computer...

Dell makes great computers for everyday net surfing etc., that is it really so pretty much if you want to do more then check your mail and surf "youtube" you should go a different route. Best of Luck!

I would say that HP is a company that makes reliable premade computers... it seems that they use parts of a decent quality (ASUS mother boards... the cases that I have seen aren't too flimsy). I haven't heard of near as many power supplies going out as Dell's.

im down for dell! using a dimension 5150 as we speak and had it for a long time and no real problems just my lack of knowledge in the beginning! i dont mod or OC or any of that so Dell will be fine! i changed the graphics card and put in a new hdd, well another one! thats it really! Dell are cool and make some nice lappy's i got an asus one of them :)

Yeah i go with him on that....if you want to buy a pc already build then go Hp.

They are great....ive had mine for over 3 years now i think and i havnt had any problems with it whatsoever.

Yeah, HP (used to be Compaq) are very good, my 1st PC was a Compaq and it had lasted like 4 years, up untill I got the one I have now, they're a lot better than Dell!

I have this same problem. I had a dell which motherboard overheated which killed everything else. Now im looking for another. Same as you:)

If the case was warped bad enough to actually short out your mobo, it seems like you would've noticed it. I'd like to think I would have. Everytime I build I'm always double checking my risers to make sure none are hitting in the middle of the mobo or anything. I'd like to hear the rest of the story on this one.

I think I'd take a look at cyberpower or someone like that. I looked at their computers before and thought they looked good. Anyone have any experience with them?

HP is to the xtreme , very good, dell is average, i can say it's good but most of the time when someone makes a complain about his/her pc being bad, it has to be a dell !!!...lol

In my opinion I think they're all right. My Inspiron 1200 stays cool and I have not got an BSOD or even one freeze on it in the past year.

well, since nobody has told you, dont buy a prebuilt period. they are overpriced and underpowered. build your own, not hard, it ensures that everything will work, and you'll feel much more 'at home' with a computer you make yourself

Nobody told him that because he said he couldn't/didn't want to try it again. Did you read the original post?

I never knew HP was so great. I knew they used to make pretty good printers.

Can anyone vouch for Cyberpower or Ibuypower?
