Is hard drive software neccesary?

I got a wd 500 gb external drive and i just wanna use it to store videos and some music.Theres documentation, autorun, mionet, wd mac and windows tools, Jstart... does all this stuff do anything significant or is it like HP printer software that gives you a bunch of discs and programs when I just need the driver so I can print a piece of paper?

To just store stuff on it you really don't need any of that stuff.
