Is it a bad idea?

hm very poorly worded question I shall say but il try and answer.

It depends on the desktops specs and the laptop specs. Laptops do tend to get hot but they sell cooler mats for em, and well desktops get hot as well.

Depends what your running on em.

As a general answer though, No desktops are cheaper for way better hardware.

If I had the option to use a desktop I would choose a desktop over a laptop any day. But, there are laptops out there that are pretty powerful (the new Dell XPS) but they are very very expensive.

Well my parents just bought me one for Christmas, cause I'm a college student (freshman) to replace my desktop I've had for 4 years. The laptop is duo core, 2GB, Geforce 8600, etc. so it's better than what I had.

The thing is I don't want to have it over heat because I rarely ever shut down my computer, and transfering my files I need for classes and old papers I have written and pictures are going to be a bitch to transfer from the desktop to laptop.

But I think it's too late for a refund....

Well if it's just doing basic simple tasks like that all night and all it shouldn't be an issue because those aren't cpu/system intensive tasks at all.

But then again they are laptops and have weird tendencies.

I'm currently using my older laptop as a desktop, as my desktop is out right now and the screen on the laptop is broken. It will overheat, and definitely don't leave it on overnight.

even with a cooling pad?

Plus you said OLDER.
Mines a 2007 model and duo core, not no 1990s mac piece o shit

Ah yes but remember this, since it's a new dual core it's fast and powerful, that means more heat.

I misplaced my words, there called notebook chill mats, from what ive seen they work nicely
