is it important for a HD?

yup.. shouldnt be a problem... but... did you drive over your case or so? I mean, why would you mount a hdd like that?
 
hmm... cant you just put it inside the case? would be much safer for the disk (or are you using it as mobile HD? )
 
My first computer I modified I added an extra HDD from my old dell to my Compaq, and there was no room for the extra HDD so i left the side panel open, and the HDD hung out the side of the case by the wires. It ran like that for over a year no problems haha.
 
The problem will be if you bump them and any type of metal comes into contact with the PCB on the bottom of the drive. It will more than likely short something out, and then your drive is pretty much useless.
 
You should of seen how I had the drives dangling within one of my builds last night ;) Though, one HD was about dead to start with, but the other was fine.

To answer the question, though, the drives can be sitting however you want. Upside down, sideways, on either end, etc etc. AS LONG AS it's not bumped while it's running, you should be just fine.
 
maybe its just a myth, some say the disks inside the drive will be damaged when it spins cuz it would hit the read/write head.

Had a buddy tell me that he doesn't defrag his laptop because it makes the HDD spin faster then it supposed to. and that its laptop related um ok lol

i currently have 3hdds in my desktop 2 that powered as of now. the main drive is sitting almost like the one in the picture just sitting on wires in the bottom of the 5.25" drive bays as i only have room for the other 2 and a floppy in the 3.5" area (ya its an old case and cramped) and all seems to be working fine. although temps are higher as there is less airflow 29C vr's 21C

Well you're buddy has no clue what he's talking about :P A harddrive rotates at a constant speed. If it begins to speed up or slow down, something's majorly wrong :P
