I just bought a new HP pavilion A6130N desktop with windows Vista Premium.ok
my question is : since I'm not a big fan of windows vista, would it be ok to formate and install Windows XP instead ?
and I didn't get any recovery CD with the PC so should I make one ? if so how can I do it ? (I've read somewhere I can burn it to DVD)

If you are going to format vista why even bother with a recovery cd ?
just buy yourself a winXP cd from your store and install it.

and why not keep vista for the moment and learn to use it ?

First off, where did you buy the computer from that you didn't get a recovery CD? I would look into that. If you bought it from a store, you need to tell them to fork it over. If you purchased online from HP, they should send one to you upon request ( a lot of companies don't auto-ship them with their systems anymore, not sure why).

A clean install of WinXP would be fine, provided you have an OEM version. Since it's an HP, you'll need either an OEM CD or an HP CD; something like a Dell Recovery CD would not work. An Upgrade CD would work as well, but you'd need an earlier version of Windows installed (or have the earlier version on an OEM CD). In case of the latter, any OEM Windows CD would work (Dell, Gateway, whatever) and allow you to use the Upgrade CD.

If you buy it online they usually charge you $10-$20 for a restore CD (I know HP and Dell do). However you should be able to make your own using an included program or Norton Ghost.

You can install XP if you'd like, however unless you already have it, IMO it would be a waste of money to spend $100+ when you already have an OS.

Dell always sends my stuff for free when I ask. You buy the OS from them, they should give you the OS CD. I'm not sure where this only shipping the CD on request started, but all the companies seem to do it. Dell will try to charge you, but if you tell them you never received a CD and you want them to send it to you, they will.

And yes, I've had to do it on numerous occasions. Though I build my own systems, my wife's family is very dedicated to Dell. Which is good, because I love their Customer Service.

Your computer may come with a utility to create "disaster recovery" disk(s), you'll need to contact your tech support or read their documentation about the PC in order to do so.

Make sure all the hardware including video has drivers for Windows XP.

You'll need to buy the full install copy of Windows XP, that's going to run you about $200.

Personally I'd stick with Vista, it's really nice, do you have specific requirements, i.e. software which won't run under it?

You will probably have to buy a recovery cd as stated above but whats the point? If you don't like vista install xp; but what would cause you to want to use xp for now and comeback to vista?
Sorry that i can't really help you, i am just curious as to see your needs in a OS.
