hi, i am goning to buy a sony A417M but the processor is only 1.8Ghz, would i be able to buy a new one at a later date and install that?

you might be able to buy a new one, bit I would be pretty suprised if you could open up your laptop and install it. Laptops are not supposed to upgradable, except by the manufacturer, so dont get your hopes up.

There are a couple that are. I don't know about that sony, but I beleive my Averatec is. I've yet to actually open it, but I hear word of people swapping the processors... However, I'm pretty sure there is a little pannel on the bottom that gives me access to the processor. I don't beleive many other laptops have such areas...

If you look around, say on ebay, you can find some mainboards from damaged laptops they are trying to sell. Many times you can see how the processor is soldered to the board...

most laptops have cpu that are upgradeable and are easily opened. how do you think the manufacture takes it apart?

i think you would struggle to do that with out busting the laptop. getting them open is hard enough. i would not bother with the upgrade a PM 1.8Ghz is quite reasonable

the pentium M 1.86ghz is quite fast and won't need any upgrading any time soon. opening a laptop is fairly simple depending on the make. however yonah is supposed to come out next year which will be the dual core pentium M.

i broke my toshiba p15 and i could take out the cpu in it. i took out the fan cover to get to the cpu. its really not that hard.

one purpose of this machine will be to play games, and looking at BF2 which requires a 1.6Ghz processor, i was just thinking that maybe they are gonna start bringing out newer games which require more powerful processors

if you are a hardcore gamer i would look into building a gaming machine and just get a smaller laptop for high school or college use.

I have an older hp with a p3 800 mhz. I took it apart and the chip is in a socket but it is not the normal socket 370 with the empty spot in the center, the pins are in a solid square and the chip is considerably smaller than a normal intel processor.

1.Use Sissoft Sandra to evaluate ur motherboard. It will suggest u the maximum Ghz processor ur MB may support.

2. Yea its tricky to actually install the processor but u may be able to do it with some tech savy person sitting with u. B care to remove every possible source of power b4 ur open ur laptop, also keep the screen very safely (U have remove the screen to open ur laptop).

3. Also while working on the open laptop, wear some plastic sleepers or work on thick carpet with sleeper, ur body has enough electric charge to damage the MB.

It's not that hard to get into a laptop, I've opened Compaq Presario, Dell's, IBM's simply by looking at the manufacturer's instructiosn you can download off the internet.

There are panels on the bottom of the laptop that you can remove and gain access to certain hardware such as the harddrives, RAM, wireless compartements. But the most important part to remove to get full accessibility to the laptop is the keyboard in most instances.

For my old Dell laptop, you had to remove a few screws from the bottom, pop off the plastic covers under the screen, and then the keyboard would lift off. You then had to unplug it and remove it. After that, you have full access to most of the motherboard, video card, processor, etc.

Taking apart the screen is a whle nother story. Wouldn't recommend that without osme detalined printouts of interior and part placement.
