is it stealing internet?

well a good friend of mine was telling me he had free internet. then he went on to say he has a pci card with a antenna and just puts it out his window. i was like WOW free. but yea it crashes and isnt the most stable internet. but he gets around 11Mbps. so i bought one as well. mine is a Net Gear WN311B. and works very well. i use to have cable but went to dish. and i might get DSL later on. but hey its free internet. is this bad? i did a test and seems that im getting about the same a middle class DSL.
 
I guess you are connecting to someone's unsecured wireless router with your card.
You should get your own line.
 
First he doesnt get 11Mbps internet, thats just the wireless card speed.

And yes it is illegal and people have been prosecuted for it.
 
I would say it isn't stealing... All you are doing is using a connection, that is freely available, to access the internet. There isn't a way of stealing the internet... Atleast, none that I know, haha...

Now, what you may be doing is using someone else's paid-for internet connection, but since you don't have to hack anything in order to use it, I would say it is ok.

The only way it's legal is if its a public hot spot. If your getting access from someones private network, it's illegal.
 
Just because that someone doesn't know how to secure his internet that doesn't mean we are allowed to use it :)
It's somewhat an ethical thing.
 
I see what you are both saying (Omega and Shady), but it's their own fault if someone doesn't know how to secure their wireless internet connection. It's like leaving a £50 on the road and saying that nobody is allowed to pick it up...

Well, that's how I see it.
 
If you were walking in the street and found a car that is open and the keys are in there, would you take it ? :)

but people have been prosecuted for it though, even if they were "silly" enough to leave it unsecured, this is a topic thats been discussed quite intently.

It would be fairly easy to prosecute it over here under certains terms of the law. For instance in order to access the internet from someone elses house you would be accessing their router to do so. The firmware within that router is covered under the misuse of computers act and thus illegal to use without permission from the owner :)

Yes, it is their own fault if their connection isn't secured but as has been said it's illegal and you can be prosecuted for using another persons connection without their knowledge. It just takes them to suddenly become aware of what's happening...

took the words out of my mouth. its kinda like a childish feeling stealing internet. just put the antenna out there and bam free internet. you knows its bad. but you also know you can be cought unless some one really spends the time and money to track you down.
 
i'd laugh if you connected to someone's network like that to use their internet, and you had several folders on your computer shared, and the person who's network you connected to realized what you were doing and deleted all of your files.

lol your mean. but true it could happen. but for me if this person got into my system and deleted my files i can care less. ive formatted and installed windows about 100 times. im like a pro now lol.
 
I posted something like this a long time ago and now that I think of it, it's sort of unethical and If you don't have your own internet I would consider it stealing.
 
it pretty much is stealing, what would also would be funny is if you went out and spent 30 - 50 dollars on the wireless card only to find that the very next day the person secured their connection so you couldn't connect. Sorry i know i'm mean, but it's stealing thats all there is to it.
