Is it the motherboard?

I have been having a couple strange problems with my computer lately. When my computer turns on it freezes on the GATEWAY bios screen, fan running heavily. At this point I must unplug the computer from the wall and plug it back it. After this on the next boot it works fine. It cannot perform cold boots. And another thing: I have a translucent wormy squiggle line that wiggles like a worm, on my monitor. It is quite hard to see the line but I can see it with a dark background. i don't know if it could be the internal power supply. I recently added 3 sticks of RAM (512MB), a graphics card, and an internal hard drive (within the last few months). Its any other Gateway 420GR except for the upgrades, so if you need more information please Google because I don't know all the specifics of my system. Replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You may need a new power supply because it is not giving your CPU or Motherboard enough power to start running processes. Maybe you should check where your computer is placed. Sometimes if the CPU gets too cold it has trouble starting. I had this problem with my gateway to but it was too hot because I left it in a cabinet during the summer. My Athlon chip melted. You probably need a new power supply because you just added Ram a Graphics Card and Hard Drive that can eat away your power supply if it is under 300w. I suggest getting a 500w power supply. By the way what kind of processor do you have???

Adding a Harddrive, ram and a new video card could be pulling quite abit on the gateway stock P/S, the wiggle worm:D sound more like a video card issue than a monitor since it moves.

Thanks for the replies.

I sure hope I just need a new power supply. They aren't expensive are they? After all that upgrading I haven't a lot of money. Are they easy to install? I had a hard enough time installing the RAM. And Best Buy charges $40 for each piece of hardware they install.

PS it's an Intel Pentium 4 2.93 GHz
