Is It Worth Getting A 64bit?

Hi, at the minute my computer has a Geforce 6800 Ultra (running poor if I say so), 2GB of RAM and a 2700+ AMD Athlon 32bit.

I think my graphics card is underpeforming. In Counter Strike Source I got 78FPS on the stress test. However when I play in the game the FPS can drop to 20 at times.

My question is, if I get a 64bit processor will it make my computer run better because it really is underpeforming at the minute. If so, which one?

Thanks in advance,

Stocko.

Sheeesh! I'd hate to see what mine would do!

Well, if it is dropping to 20 FPS in counterstrike, which isn't the most demanding game in the world, perhaps you should buy one...?

I would just check whether you have spyware/adware on your computer, delete them, then try the game again... Although, I just can't seem to believe that the 6800 Ultra goes to 20 FPS!!?!?!

What motherboard do you have? If it only supports 4x then that'll be why...

He said CS:S which is a much more demanding game than CS 1.6.

Yes, your computer will probably run better. Which one? I'm not sure, but I would get something equal to or above a 3200+.

Tell use what all your specs are on your computer by there full name. I think your bottlenecking somewhere and as far as what you told us im looking at that 2gb of memory there slowing you down.

I really don't think there's any point in purchasing a 64-bit processor yet, as the Windows OS can't handle them for them to be efficient.

Perhaps when Longhorn is released, then maybe they'll be worth the while then.

GeForce 6800 Ultra should run fine on CS:S but it can run slow because of the setting you have on it...Check the Video settings.

That's cuz HL2 is CPU bound and you have an older CPU

The fact that it's a 64bit processor wont do jack all. The fact that its a better processor will. For instance, any 64bit capable Intel processor will outgun your AthlonXP by sheer brute force and any K8 based processor will own you because of the on-die memory controller.

Unlikely. AGP4x isnt as big a penalty as many people would have ya think

Again you're not (nor should u really unless u have specific intentions) buying a processor for the fact that it is 64bit ... but for the fact that its better. It just happens to be that many 64bit procs are better than 32bit ones

Perhaps when Longhorn is released, then maybe they'll be worth the while then
Or when WindowsXP x64....

it IS your processor, i have read something before about how processors can make ur vry good vid cards not work at their full potetntial, for the 6800ultra i would recromend a 3500 64bit- if u can afford it, but also make sure ur mobo will support 64bit

1. A processor can bottleneck final performance in a GPU bound game but it wont limit the potential of a video card
2. OBVIOUSLY the motherboard has to support 64bit .. otherwise you cant physically install it
