is it worth getting a full SSD drive

or is it best to save the money and just get a smaller sized msata for system files? if i go with the msata what size would you recommend for system files 32, 64, or 128. or would you just go with a 256+ intead of a large hdd+msata if your laptop doesnt have dual hd support.
 
It really depends on your storage needs, some people have very liittle files so there storage needs are low, others have huge amount of files so need large storage drives.

An ssd is certainly one of the cheapest and best ways to make any computer faster, but in a laptop with only one hd bay can be a harder choice.

The most common size ssd people have is 120-128gb, then a large storage hdd.

You could install a 120gb ssd in the laptop and have a large external hdd for files.
 
you know what thats a good idea. so i guess ill just go with a 128 which is cheap. after windows 8 and basic drivers are installed how much space does that take up usually?

Just windows and drivers? Well it will depend as the page file will be dynamic, but you would be looking anywhere between 30GB and 50GB.
 
Windows 7 is just under 20GB on my SSD on my laptop. I can assume Windows 8 will be a few gigs larger.
 
so when i swap out the stock hdd would i need to clean install windows. or can i use restore backup disks or cloning software?

Windows 8 is smaller in my experience.

Make sure you disable hibernation if you don't use it to save some gigabytes too (can save about 10-20GB).

I've got a 128GB SSD and a 2TB hard drive and Windows 8 with a load of programs is consuming 81GB of space, so 128GB is big enough but the 256GB drives are coming down in price so if you can I'd go 256GB now.

I've used several SSDs now and the 128GB drives are around 119GB or 120GB once formatted, and the 120GB drives are around 114GB once formatted - just bear in mind you'll lose some gigabytes (as per the usual anyway).
