Would it be worth going to vista from xp.
Just for general stuff like internets and games... word prcoessing too maybe.
gimme all the pros and cons or a short yes or no answer.
mainly im asking is it worth all the installing/configuring stuff. like setting up passwords, networks, settings, security...general crap you have to do after a reformat and reinstall, or can i load settings from xp? i will have 2 computers.

Don't install vista on a computer with less than 2gb of ram as it will slow it down. If your going to be gaming and want direct x 10 then you 'll have to go to vista. If not, I would stay with XP. I know i've tried networking computers between Vista and XP and its difficult sometimes.

Wait for Windows 7 to come out and upgrade to that, Windows 7 much much better that Vista, faster startup and more features too. Vista is good, but there is no real point getting it now, although if you do, you will be offered the upgrade to Windows 7 for free.

I had the RC Windows 7, looks amazing, i put it on my very crappy PC, old 2003 build, with 1.5 ram and it work better than my computer now, which is 2007 build. Vista would probably struggled on it.

Not sure about your last point, I think when you install your new software whatever it will be, it should save a copy of your XP version, so everything you had on XP you would have in a file, thats what it did for me, and you could just copy from there.

Although make sure you have enough memory

Oh good. I just posted that I want to rid Vista off my computer. Now I can dual boot with XP or Ubuntu.

Yeah i was running vista with 1 GB of ram and worked just fine upgraded to 2 GB just because I felt like it.

thanks for the responses...my build is taking a long time...looks like i'll wait for windows 7...
I'll probably get two of those 2GB ram kits for $20 bucks each off ebay.. DDR2

I wonder what DX11 will be like or if a new opengl is released..isnt opengl up to 2.1 or 3.0?

Just saw this thread and had a question. My current laptop came with Vista Business, with a downgrade disk to XP Pro (which is what I run). So, can I install Vista on this machine, and then "upgrade" to 7? If so, is there any time limit? Thanks.

You can install Windows 7 without installing Vista first.
# Running Earlier Versions?
# If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications.

Cool, i heard they were going to call it Vienna or something.

Look like i'll get Windows 7 Professional. Half of those features are useless anyway IMHO

Ultimate isn't worth like 10 extra dollars, but charges hundreds.

indeed, but they do say, i read somewhere, that it has more protection, a few extras, like you can change the language of the system, easy. but i suppose it is not worth the amount that they are charging.

Home Premium it is! All i need to do is games, internet and maybe some word/office crap for school.
Holidays nearly over for me... :(
