Is it worth it?

I am in the process of my first build! I have narrowed down my cpu's to the AMD Phenom II X3 720 and the AMD Phenom II X4 940. I play games alot and want something that will last a while. I would like to get into oc'ing too. And as always budget is a concern. Read that the 720 is easier to work with but what do i know. Also was looking at the ASUS M4A79 motherboard. Any thoughts for me would be great. :)

That's a tough call, but I would go with the X4 940, slightly higher clock and an extra core. But if your budget says no then go with the X3. Maybe you could save the money by going with a lower CPU and put that money elsewhere to improve another component.

if i were you i would go intel. they have kinda been owning the cpu market since C2D came out. of course before that my athlon kicked P4's ass.

Ph2 is actually trading blows with Yorkfields/Wolfdales, so unless his budget warrants an i7, AMD is a very viable option.

I think the reality is that, with most applications, the difference between the two may be fairly meaningless. Both of these are powerful processors. A higher clock speed will provide a small boost in performance for graphics games. The fourth core may not matter much but the higher clock speed will help a little.

Thanks for the help guys. I think i will go with the 720. It would be a good starter. And if i burn it up playing around with oc'ing it won't hurt my pocket as much. Lol!
