Is Microsoft Remote Desktop going away?

Hi!
Just saw that Microsoft is ending support for the Remote Desktop app. Bit of a pain since I use it regularly. I’ll probably have to switch to a third-party tool now.
Any recommendations? What do you think about it?

No need to worry. Microsoft only discontinued the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store. If you use Remote Desktop to connect to Windows PCs, that still works just fine. For cross-platform access there are alternatives like HelpWire and others.

To confirm: Starting May 27, 2025, the Remote Desktop app for Windows from the Microsoft Store will no longer be supported or available for download and installation. Users must transition to Windows App to ensure continued access to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box.

It does not apply to the Remote Desktop client standalone installer (MSI), which can be downloaded from Download and install the Remote Desktop client for Windows (MSI). (which I found out it will be discontinued next year, hopefully by then the Windows App will allow you to add devices... at least that is how it is for us)

Remote Desktop Connection however is not going away. You can still use this to connect to other Windows machines.
