is my 6800 GT fried???

hello,

i think my graphic card is fried :(

was working on sorting out my PC (a monthly scan and clean up) and used registry booster 2 to defrag the reg and clean up any issues as have done a lot of deleting and moving of files lately.

anyway, long story short, i needed to reboot and when the PC came back on-line i was in 600x800 res and my nvidia 6800 GT no longer was working. fair enough. i restored ALL registry changes and even did a system restore and still no good.

was able to get the res back to something useful and have since tried to install the nvidia drivers 91.47 but have had NO luck in getting the nvidia 6800 GT working. most recently i installed forceware 163.75 but i think that one is a bit too much for my uses, should i try another one???

when the PC boots up nothing from nvidia loads like it used to, apart from the
nforce tray options but thats only for audio. and can i update that one by the way?

i have dual monitors and am currently running on the integrated graphics from the moboard.

have included some screen shots of my system info and hardware info.
have re-started numerous times using system restore, re-installing drivers, uninstalling drivers from add/remove in control panel and still no luck.

i'm starting to fear the worst that the vid card is fried (after googling for a few hours).

you guys are always my last hope and you always come through with great news, i hope its true this time too :)

all help is appreciated and thanks for reading!

What do mean by it's not working? Do games start up but only display black/white screens, do they encounter errors, if so what are they?

I would uninstall the drivers, run drivercleaner pro and attempt to reinstall the driver you currently had working..

Have you tried reinstalling your directx version? The cleaner could have deleted needed files our corrupted it. You could run the direct 3d tests under dxdiag to be certain.

Oh and the nvidia tray option is located under msconfig startup as nvmctray, check if it's there, any driver version should carry it, so if it isn't then we know the drivers are still screwed.

ok, it's not working because the page refreshes SUPER SLOW (like i have no RAM) and the system props show no drivers installed for it.
have tried reinstalling nvidia drivers but no luck, same with directx.

will check out drivercleaner pro and get back...

cannot run direct3d tests under dxdiag as that box is blanked out as shown here...shit, no more space to UL it. anyway, take my word for it, dxdiag is showing NOTHING for a display device and it says i'm using the integrated one.
its all weird...

ok, have used driver cleaner pro (as per instructions) and am now rebooted with no VGA drivers installed
Xp is not seeing a nvidia card but only a VGA device (with no driver)

to be triple sure i don't mess this up, what is the next step?
should i install the latest nvidia drivers for the nvidia geforce 6800 GT which would be 163.75 according to their homepage??

god i feel dumb but don't want to screw this up, thanks

well, installed the latest nvidia 163.75 and no luck.
the vid card showed up in the device manager but had a yellow question mark beside it.

so will uninstall drivers and try the last known working one for me which was 91.47.

I can't see the card being broken, it worked, you cleaned the registry with an app, and then it didn't, this has to be some sort of software problem...

I can think of two things so late, my computer>manage>event viewer. Check both system and application for any error codes that might be related to the problem..

And two, a repair install of windows, as long as you have the windows cd and key. this will delete all windows files, then reinstall them. It leaves everything else alone, desktop, documents, etc, only windows files are touched..

Maybe someone else has an idea too.

ok, no luck yet :( but have discovered something that may help...

my video monitor drivers are not installed as i checked with the samsung discs as i had a hunch about this. anyone heard of this affecting the nvidia driver setup before?

also just noticed that there are no 'monitors' in my device manager.
and no 'display adapters' either which is where the nvidia card would be.

anyone ever had this happen??
am trying to re-install my samsung monitor drivers now...

There are no monitor drivers! Their just "guides"...

I say reformat. Probably that piece of software screwed up your computer.... Never use freeware...

Look into it! What error is it? Hardware conflict?

freeware can be good.....sometimes.

formatting c: is a last resort for me, have too many programs installed and would need an entire day to sort it out as i'm sure your all aware.

anywho, am still working on it and am looking into the nforce chipset drivers at the moment.

thanks for the support!!!!

well, i am at a total loss for ideas now.
device manager had the nvidia chipset bit - check
on reboot vga device was recognized - check
installed last known working nvidia driver - check
on reboot the 6800 GT was in the device manager under display but it had a little yellow question mark beside
was unable to install the monitor drivers

the last thing i can think of if there is a base nvidia driver i need to install before going to 91.47. meaning do i need driver A before using driver B?

other than that it seems like i'm in search of a good windows boot cd, know of any reliable torrents??

and thanks everyone for your help, much appreciated but 2 full days on this problem is too much :(

Nope, driver A not needed, just one.. Don't use that program again lol!

Try mininova, and check out the comments. Reliable. Do you have the key? If not you could pprobably find a cracked version, but that's piracy and I frown upon that!!! *stomp, stomp* :D

finally got the PC on reboot to recognize the card (after i turned it off and unplugged it) but when it went to install the drivers the error message of 'cannot install this hardware as the drivers are either corrupt or missing' came up.
and this is AFTER i did all the right steps to get rid of ANY nvidia drivers for this card.

i hope a full re-install will sort this out....

just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who helped out and in the end i did a re-install of XP which solved everything and as a bonus i'm running much much much faster too!!
this forum rocks, thanks again!!
