is my cpu busted?

man i had one hell of a day. I built this computer for my dad, and it kept freezing on this mup.sys I just couldn't get the dam thing to boot. So anyways i switched power supply and now i could boot into safe mode, and the computer would go into that windows xp logo with the bar loading. Then crash from there, BUT I COULD GET INTO SAFE MODE!!!! i was pretty happy about that. Anyways gotta couple of question. I was a little worried first off that i wasn't able to get into anything. thought i might have broken the cpu on install, i hate to say it but i did force the heatsink on a little 2 much i think. So what i was wondering though, since i was able to boot into safe mode, does this mean my cpu isn't broken?

If you even see the post screen the cpu is ok. Without a bad cpu "nothing" loads at all. The only thing you would hear or see onscreen is cpu failure or a constant beeping sound from the board's speaker! The problem there is most likely a bad install of Windows where some needed files were not copied to the hard drive in order to see Windows fully installed.

the only thing is that i can load it with my other setup. I just have to do a little more experimenting, it might be a bios setting i have to change, but the reason i can't test it out, is because i don't think i put the heatsink right, cause i saw smoke start to form, so i quickly turn the computer off removed the cpu and sure enough, the thermal paste had been i guess spread to thin from my trying to get the heatsink on. I'm pretty sure its ok, but its good friday and there are no stores open. If anyone knows why a computer might be booting and then crashing at the windows logo screen while loading, it would help alot, keep in mind it probaly not a problem with my windows xp, thanks.

Smoke starting to form? Even without the hsf even attached the cpu would cook fast without any smoke seen! It would certainly get hot like the one did here on the last build when the cpu fan went. You may be looking at something else wrong there like a bad cap on the board itself.

i'm pretty confident it was the heat sink, just because i saw a little scorch mark on the top of the cpu, and the bottom of the heat sink, but i I realize that there was like no thermal compound there, only a little streak, so i am guessing that was why, well i'm more like praying that was why. hopefully i can get it to work tommorro when i get some thermal compound.

Remember when going to put a new application on to run the system for about 3-4hrs. and shut it down overnight or at least for several more. That starts the bonding of the adhesive mixed into the compound depending on which one you decide on. For the ceramic types they usually take upto 2 weeks to see the compound firm up completely.

what compound would you suggest? also i shouldn't use my computer for more than 3-4 hrs per day for like the first 2 weeks. I was also wondering casue it seems like when i put the compound on i have to push my heatsink down alot so that the compound ends up being spread, just wondering if this is right and should happen

You didn't follow that apparently. The first day or night in other words the first run of the system after the initial application is for 3-4hrs. in order to heat up the thermal compound itself. The cpu is also going to get hot too!

You then shut it down for several hours so the compound will start to bond during the cooling process. Over the next few days after you have to keep an eye on cpu temps to prevent overheating. On average it takes about two weeks for the compound itself through normal use to firm up fully.
