Is my CPU damaged ?

Here is a screen capture of the Performance tab in Task Manager (WinXP), while my 1½ year old Samsung X60 laptop is extracting a set of zip archive files.

The CPU is Core 2 Duo T7400 2.16GHz with 2 GB RAM.

Computer started to slow down to a crawl a week ago, taking 10 minutes to start up and multi-tasking is near impossible.

If CPU is damage, what can I do to repair it ? Any help is much appreciated.

Yeah... when I had the virtumondo virus (something like that), it caused major performance issues. To check for it I would recommend Avast because it can scan before Windows starts which is a big plus with most viruses because many will create new copies immediately upon deletion which can make it very hard to get rid of.

There's probably so much crap on there, try reinstalling your OS. You can't repair a processor unless it's bent pins, but that wouldn't be causing your issue.

The processor isn't damaged. More than likely you have some sort of virus or spyware running that needs to be removed. If removal fails, I'd recommend scanning and backing up all your files and doing a reformat and restore of the OS.

I use Zone Alarm Security Suite (not the free version) and it quarantined a trojan-downloader in the Sun\Java\Deployment directory a few days ago which I find odd, as I wouldn't suspect Sun Java to send out virus in their updates.

When I noticed the heavily lobsided CPU usage graph, I wrongly concluded that a part of the dual-core processor must be damaged; I would never have suspected a virus.

Thank you all for the replies, I will now do some research and try to clean up the virus.

Well do the following, we can help you remove the virus. In a new thread under the "Security Section" post a new thread with the name "Hijackthis" and post a Hijackthis log.

This is how you go so:

If after that you are still infected, please post a Hijackthis log. To post a Hijackthis log, please do the following:

* Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
* Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
* Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
* Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
* Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
* At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
* Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
* Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
* DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

We will look at your log as soon as we see it, and give you further instructions on how to fix your computer. Most of the time it will involve downloading more programs that will either give us logs to locate the malware or delete those malware.

Once you have posted a HJT Thread DO NOT make any changes to your PC unless the advisor helping you has instructed you to do so!
