Is my CPU too old?

Got a pentium 4 2.66 GHz I think. Had it three years. Is this too old? What does the GHz mean exactly?

What would be a cheapish but good replacement for it?

Its fine for a bit longer. Although, the pentium D, core 2 duo, and amd athlon x2 series destroys p4 in performance.

Yes it is too old.... But on a serious note, I have a P4 3.0 that is approx. 3-4 years old. It does everything I want it to do and will play games like WOW and CS. So old yes, useless -NO. These were and are good computers for internet surfing, office programs and old games.... Not worth much but it is what it is....

If you want to replace it, you would need a new motherboard and CPU, and possibly the Memory / Ram.

The CPU is old, but it depends on what you use the PC for.

I got a late 3ghz pentium 4 in one of my rigs (one of the later ones that does virtualisation, 64 bit etc...) and it runs recent games okay, although a dual core would obviously be nice.

For general stuff your one should be fine. Its not gonna run crysis very well but its not bad, and would run games like battlefield 2 etc... fine.
