Is my motherboard fried?

Hi yesterday i was just putting back a ddr. It was working fine. But then i tried to open it. The motherboard, case lights were on, and the fans (but it was spinning about half of the speed and the lights were not that bright as usual), and the computer was not starting up. No signal detected.

I tried everything to pinpoint the cause. First took the DDRs off and put one by one in all the slots available. I got the same problem. Then i tried to check every single cable, specially the motherboard one and still the it wasnt botting and the fans were slower and lights also.

Then i tried putting my power-supply from my other computer, and got the same problem, also i tried putting the power supply from the computer with problems and it was working fine, in fact im using it right now. Also the same Monitor, So its not the monitor or Power- supply. Also i tried checking if there was something touching the motherboard from behind or if the CPU was loosen but after checking, i was still getting the same problems.

One last thing i did was changing the video cards. It worked on the other pc but wasnt working in the one with the problem. Is this problem caused by the motherboard or CPU?. Also will it be cheaper to buy a new motherboard or repair it?.

I cant test the CPU because they are not compatible. There was no weird sound, the only weird thing was the speed of the fans and brightness of the light, it does not shut down tried (well some people get this problem but the computer shut down in secs) waiting 15 mins too see if there was a change, but no D: .

The motherboard is an Asus M4A78T-E Green
i dont remember the Processor but it was a Triple core 2.8-2.9.

Thanks for reading, Ill appreciate any help.

You may also want to try to unplugging and reconnecting all the power supply wires in the system. It is possible something got jarred loose. Is the power cord for the monitor is plugged in and monitor still plugged into the video card?

nop, its not. i tried unplugging everything when i was checking the back of the motherboard. Even taking the CPU and putting it back.

From what you are saying it sounds like things are not getting their proper voltage for some reason or another. Have you checked in the bios to see what they are getting ? Some boards have voltage regulator chips w/ heatsinks attached standing up from the board. Did you knock something like that askew while you were putting the DDR back in ? Have you checked for bad caps ?

Cant even start the bios " no signal detected". i put back the CPU heatsink. yes i knocked out a clip while trying to put th DDR bud i put it back. and triple checked everything. What are bad caps?

Try resetting your bios manually.

You may need to refer to your MB manual because doing it wrong can damage the MB/bios.

Are you getting a beep when the system starts? This is beep indicates the power on self test has completed. The power on self test or (POST) does a brief test on the processor, RAM and video card for problems.

I dont have it connected (the beep thingy). But the problem is not the DDR or video card for sure. because they all work on my other computer. Also i tried using only 1 DDR in every single slot to see if there was a damaged DDR slot, still got the same problem. Should i buy a new Mobo? because getting it repaired prolly cost more D: .

Is your system Original Equipment Manufacturer or did someone build it for you? You may be able to use your old case, but I would upgrade your motherboard, processor and RAM since it is so outdated. You will likely have to buy another Windows operating system. In my opinion I would get an Athlon II processor and a motherboard that uses DDR3 memory.

Repairs costs for old hardware are not worth it. If you got five years out of your present system you got your moneys worth out of it.

My motherboard its not so old. Well maybe have a year or two in the market. Also it uses DDR 3 1600. yea i think i should get a new one, it cost 99 USD + shipping and handling. But the thing is that i dont know if my CPU is the problem or the motherboard. I think my cpu was Athlon II x3 2.8. it cost me around 150 USD last year, besides my graphic card, the CPU was the most expensive piece in my computer. I built it. it was working fine for over a year.

You may want to try removing the heat sink and processor and then reinserting it again into the socket. If that doesn't work I highly doubt the processor is the problem. It almost never is. Were you overclocking the processor?

I have been trying to find specifications for the Asus M4A7BT-E motherboard but have been unable to find it on the Internet.

If the motherboard is only about a year old I would contact Asus. They may or may not replace your motherboard as it could be covered under warranty. Contact them and tell them what happened. The worst they could say is no and then you would be in the same place you already are. Asus usually has a three year limited warranty on their motherboards.

Could the PSU its self be shot? Reason why your not getting enough power, you said the fans seemed half speed and the light not as bright... they take very little power to run in the first place.

He said he tried another power supply with his motherboard to no avail. He also put his present power supply into another system and had no issues. I do not think it is a power supply problem.

No, i wasnt overclocking the processor because there are far too many risk, its not like i needed to do it, because my computer was fast. M is M4A78T-E that 8 looks like a B in the motherboard. But i lost the receipt so i doubt i will be getting any help from Asus. Ill try the disconnect every single cable, and reconnect it again. Thanks for your help tho.

- Like JHM said... Check for the caps (capacitors) on the motherboard and check for leakage.
- Make sure that all cables are placed/fastened correctly to the motherboard and to the right connectors.
- ensure that you consult the mobo (motherboard) manual if you are not sure.
- verify that the ddr is seated correctly.
