This will probably seem like a stupid question to many of you but ive just bought a new Laptop (Samsung R780), it has Windows 7 Home Premium but I was wondering, how can I find out if the OS is 64 or 32 bit?

and also whats the difference? I know that some programs aren't compatable with 64 bit but are there any other differences?

64Bit OS can adress more than 3.XGB of RAM
some programs run faster
you can find out by going to Control Panel and System
I'll bet you 100 bucks it is 32Bit

goto control panel / programs / system and security then click system. it will show system type 32 or 64. 32 bit you will install about 3.5 gig ram max. 64 bit is for higher.

Im really quite frustrated about this now, i paid £799 (about $1,220) for the laptop and it doesent even have a 64 bit operating system. Ive been on the phone to the store i bought it from but they said they cant help me over the phone and i have to take it to them so they can have a look.

Its a Samsung R780 and has a 2.27 Ghz i5 processor, 4GB RAM so dont you think it should have come with 64 bit Windows? It sure as hell can run it.

ive had 4 gig on xp 32 bit for years. seeing 3.5 gig i was happy with. i always heard though it still uses the ram. i installed win 7 64 bit pro lately. both options were there for the install.

On the other hand checking your model it looks like 64 should have been there.
I would be pissed too.

that's called bad practice. it's like buying a V8 with four burnt out cylinders...

Complain, get your money back, force them to put 64 bit on there or something. too mnay companies get away with this.

You are the lucky one. I was looking for 32bit for my new laptop but they all came with 64bit. I have 32bit on my desktop (bought a license) and think that is much better than 64bit at this time (may be different in a couple of years from now). There are several of my pet pograms that do not run on 64bit and if you have some older devices, you may have difficulties finding drivers.
