Is my psu the problem?

I have an Emachines W2888. It's two years old. I was working along fine on it last friday. Nobody touched it through the weekend. IT sat turned off but plugged in. We didn't have any storms over the weekend either. Monday, I went to turn it on and got nothing, no sounds, no lightd, no nothing. It was as if the dang thing wasn't plugged in. My first thought was that it was the power supply. Am I right? How do I troubleshoot a problem like this? Any feed back is greatly appriceated.

is the power switch connected propperly to the motherboard?
also it could be the power switch is just beeing worn out (unlikely, but possible ),.. so you could try to short the 2 pins of the power switch to try and turn it on.

edit: was there a light always lit up when the PSU was on standby ( so pc shut off, but still plugged in with the switch on the backside of the PSU still set to On)

I would go for a new power supply man. what watts do you want it ill find you a new one. is the power supply a 20 pin with 12v plug or is it a basic connector. whats the budget you willing to spend?

Did you also try plugging it up in a different outlet, use a volt meter, see if any juice is passed threw the pC, never seen a power cable go bad, but check that too

I replaced the power supply this weekend. No luck. The computer is still dead. I took the cover off the old psu and yes, it was fried. Why isn't the new power supply working? Where do I go from here?

well... if you're sure the PSU was fried, maybe you were unlucky and the motherboard or CPU is dead... :( How did you know the PSU was fried?

I heard someting rattling around when I took the old one off, do I opened it up. It was a circut completely off the circut board. All the other circuts where 1-2 millimeters off the board. The board had burn marks.

no signs of burns means only that there wasnt an insane high amperage blow'n through the motherboards circuits.. however transystors etc can be damaged without shouwing it...
what does the pc do when you try to turn it on?

I have a bad feeling about it,.. I think your motherboard might be dead.
but to rule everything else out,.. is the power switch still propperly connected?

I never did anything to the power switch. Once I saw the inside of the power supply, I was certain that was the problem. I'll check the switch tonight. If the problem is my motherboard, how do I troubleshoot it?
