Is my RAM to slow?

Hello,

I would like to upgrade my PC to run D3 flawlessly. When playing the beta I ran into a lot of skipping graphically.. This may have been due to my RAM speed and my lack of processing speed. Please let me know if there are any upgrades that I can do to improve my PC's performance (RAM). Also let me know if my new processor will improve my performance noticeably.

Here is my current setup...

Make/Model Dell XPS 400
Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz (Just purchased Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo Processor 3 GHz 6 MB Cache to replace)
GPU Radeon HD 4650 (1GB)

RAM
Memory Size 3072 MBytes
Channels Dual
Memory Frequency 266.3 MHz (3:4)

DIMM # 1
SMBus address 0x50
Memory type DDR2

Thank You,

The E8400 will not work on that motherboard.

The best you can do with C2D is probably a E7500.

You will be limited to the pentium D series processors. You have a 945 chipset motherboard and they only supported a select few core processors but Dell may have locked all them out. Your best bet would be to build a new system.

Thank you for the responses. Would you happen to know of any new mother boards that would support the new processor and also fit in my old XPS case?

Unfortunately, the xps 400 is a BTX case and only way to get a motherboard that would fit it would be to go back to dell for it and you'll be spending more money then anything. Your best bet would be to return the processor and build a new system all together.

Thank you for you help.

I just bought a new PC... here are the specs.

Please let me know if i need to upgrade the GPU or anything else.

HP Pavilion p7xt

MOTHERBOARD
Manufacturer: Pegatron
HP: Carmel

PROCESSOR
Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2100 dual-core processor [3.1GHz, 3MB cache]

MEMORY
4GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM [2 DIMMs]
Total memory slots: 2 DIMM

HARD DRIVE
1TB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive

GRAPHICS CARD
1 GB ATI Radeon HD 4650

If you are talking about diablo 3 then the only minor thing I see wrong with it is that its a little under the recommended requirements for the video card. It will work but not on high settings. Recommended card is a 4870.

The Core i3 2100 Processor has more than three times the processing power of your old Pentium D. What you need now is a decent power supply.

Too bad a lot of manufacturers do not provide for a place to replace the power supply with a good quality third party power supply unit in their cases.

Using Dual Channel

One thing to remember when you have dual channel is to try to match the channels up. Usually the channels that are paired together are color coded to make it easier. Usually the pairs are 1-3 and 2-4. In your case your RAM would actually be better if you put the 1Gb sticks in the 1-3 slots and the 512 in the 2-4. In my experience the dual channels always work best if you have the same ram in both slots of that channel.
Since you bought a new computer it doesn't matter for you but this may make a difference to others.
