Is my router Broken? What caused it...

hi! recently i was trying to set up a server for a game on my router. the server never worked and out of frustration i undid every change i mad to the router (ports that i opened i closed again). a hour later my router crashed and i had to reset it to default settings. my father was mad because his printer connected to out computer through the router and he had to set up our printer again. the router keeps die-ing and i have to reset it to factory default every time. my dad is frustrated at me even though i told him that it has to be the router just getting old and i had nothing to do with it because anything i could do to break it would be removed in the factory reset. So my question is... is it possible anything i did could break the router or did the router just break??? really need a quick answer because we are buying a new one soon. :confused: can anyone clarify the situation??? (srry for bad grammer and spelling im on a crap keyboard)
 
If all you were doing was port forwarding then it's highly unlikely that you broke the router to the point of needing to do a factory reset.
 
The only thing I can think of is if you tried loading third party firmware, or if it's wireless you adjusted the transmit power too high, although chances are the firmware limits it just for this reason. If you didn't do either of those, and you are sure you did a full factory reset, I don't see how you could have caused that.

What I would do is check the manufacturers website for any firmware updates.

thanks guys, i never loaded any firm ware so i think we just have a dead router. cant thank you enough

Yea my dad believes me now. i was aware i was right its just my dad needed comfirmation. i dont have any buddies that know a turd about routers so i asked you guys. couldnt thank you enough, thought my head was gonna be gone tommorrow.

was gonna post another thread but that seems pretty spammy. but does any body know a good router to buy? my old one was a dlink 655

I'd still recommend attempting to upgrade the firmware, if there is any available.

I highly recommend the Asus AC68U.

I had a perfectly good DIR-615 for a long time. All it did was work and cost $30 :D

Generally, if you don't need much beyond the basic configuration (ie port forwards, auto connect your DSL, wireless setup, etc) you are usually OK with any brand router.

True, but I love my Asus A68U for several reasons, such as:
