Is OCing necessary?

Rig is in my sig.

Its a gaming computer, and I plan to play Crysis/EQ2/Dirt2/etc on full graphics.

Is overclocking my computer going to help performance at all? If it won't change much i probably won't bother learning about it/getting into it.

Will there be benefits for me?

As always, appreciate the help guys. I love this forum.

I think you should be fine playing those games without lag for now at least without OC. Personally though i would overclock your i5-750 by about 20% though just for the increased performance =)

The I5 @ 3.2ghz or so would be fantastic increase on performance side but you would need a after-market cooler if your using stock.

Maybe I'm confusing my old I7 860 then compared to the I5 I used to have. The first two cores would have a higher multiplier than the last 2 when in turbo boost. Does the I5 not do that?

Increased performance doing what? Gaming? What will work better with a higher clocked cpu?

Thanks for all the great responses!

FPS usually improves in games, although they are probably pegged to the max with any game.

What all do you do with your PC?

87dtna's sig :)

Main rig:
Core I3 [email protected] 1.3875 Vcore, TRUE cooler, Antec 200 case, Gigabyte P55-UD4P board, 4gb of OCZ ddr3 1600 CL7, ECS 9800GX2, 2x OCZ vertex 64gb SSD raid 0, Enermax 720w modular PSU, win 7 ultimate x64.

Is that thing stable at 4.6 ghz? lol and aint it hot???

100% stable, it's my 24/7 overclock. It's actually 1.3925 Vcore I gotta fix that. I run a thermalright ultra extreme CPU cooler, max temp is 80c using real temp (which is the core temp not cpu temp) using Prime95 smallFFT, which is still plenty safe the TJmax is over 100c.

I can get 4.8ghz fully stable, but it requires 1.5375 Vcore. Also, I have turned off hyper threading and got 5ghz on air, but at voltages I shouldn't repeat haha especially on a 32nm chip.
