what about windows 7 home version ?

For "normal" use like surfing, e-mail and so on P4 is fine, as long as you stay with XP. But yea, it is quite old...if you're going for Vista, it might handle it if you disable aero, but a system that old probably won't have the memory it takes to run vista smooth, and I don't think it's worth upgrading...

Pet 4 is sort of old... to run vista you would need a new CPU.

That's plain wrong advice bro, while Pentium 4 is indeed old now, it doesn't mean he has to get a Core series processor to run vista.
I've seen P4 with 2GB ram running Vista with Aero, i really think Ram matters and not the processor, hell even my old Celeron with 1Gb ram ran vista.

concerned about all your problems, for now stick with XP, until there are solutions to them

'Old' does not equal 'obsolete'.

Just because P4's are "old" technology doesn't mean everyone needs 'A new CPU right now, OMG!!1!1!eleven!!!' If it suits what you use your computer for, then by all means, run with it! Why spend money on something you don't need? If it's all good for you as-is, then it's all good regardless! :)

I'd recommend following Imsati's advice! A P4 seems perfectly fine to me for your use, actually even a P3 would be good enough.

Question : why would you want to buy Vista?

Windows 7 won't be out of a few years so you can't upgrade to that. Stick with XP.

Agreed!! My mom's old Dell has a P4 3.0ghz and it runs alright with XP and 512mb ram but there is no way it would be able to run Vista even if it had 2gb ram. The bootleneck on my mom's pc is actually the P4 and not the Ram. Kinda weird right? Her ram usage is always low as heck b/c of a reformat so it's clean but, the cpu is always working hard even during easy tasks.

OMZORZ!!! THAT IS TEH OLDNESS!!! IT SUXORZ@!!!!GET A CORE 2 DUO IT IS TEH BESTZORZ!!! no just kidding. It should be fine. My mom has a old 3.2 p4 and she multitasks a pretty good bit and it does fine. Dont get vista.

Well, if XP is all you are running and you don't crunch numbers with 7200 exponents attached to the end of it or play these intensive video games, a P4 is OK.

Don't worry about having the latest and greatest CPU. Since I'm a Linux user, I can run a Windows Vista cousin (a Linux OS that came out just as Vista did or after) on a 600Mhz PIII (with 32 MB) in great shape-it runs openSUSE 10.3 great! It works even better - it's like lightning on my 2.6 GHz Athlon 64 and on my Intel Core 2 2.1 GHz. I don't have to worry about my computers becoming outdated so quick.

I wouldn't call any Linux distro a cousin of Vista. Vista is it's own beast.

The strong suit of Linux is that very outdated systems can run many different distros at least fairly well. They can be extremely resource-light at the minimum.

P4's are old, yes, but not that old. My family is still running one and it's fast as hell paired with an ATI Radeon X9550 AGP. Doom 3 on Max :D (Surprisingly better than my own computer [ specs in sig])

Stick with XP. Vista isn't worth it.

And Windows 7 isn't out yet. Not until sometime next year I believe.
Hopefully it's launch will be better than Vista's.

I've had very little compatability issues with Vista(only my bluetooth dongle)and I'm running 4 machines with it!! and as for Windows 7 launch being better than Vista's, by that I assume you mean ON TIME !!!!!:)
