is power supply crashing my pc

Hi guys

I ll try my best to explain my problem. What happens is that occasionly (2times this week) my computer just crashes and turns off, it literally just goes off but the blue power light is still on. If i reset or turn it off and on i just get beeps from the bios. So then i have to remover the bios battery then put it back in and then its fine. I need to find out what is causing these crashes.

my specs are

i7 CPU 930 @ 2.80GHz
windows 7 64 bit
12gig ddr3 ram
radeon 5870 1 gig
1tb hdd

The temps are all okay according to speed fan and hmonitor.

what concerns me is that there may not be enough power for my system.
I have a 550w supply, speed fan gives me these readings.

vcore1 0.93v
vcore2 0.13v
+3.3v 3.34v
+5v 4.95v
+12v 11.97v
-12v -1.75v
-5v -1.99v
+5v 5.00v
vbat 3.22v

hmonitor gives me a red warning on aux voltage that fluctuates between 0.11v - 0.27v

i do not know what these readings mean but it struck me that the 3.3v and 12v readings from speedfan are at the max.

what do you guys think abuot this?
 
what mobo/PSU do you have(make/model).

ps.does it only turn off under load or does it do it random @idle/light work.

the mobo is asrock x58 extreme
the psu is delta electronics so could be a cheapy i dont know.
the psu says
+5v 26A
+12v1 18a
+12v2 18a
+12v3 18a
+3.3v 28a
-12v 0.5a
+5vsb 2.5a

does that sound like a capable psu ?

i should add that its happened four times. The first was before xmas when i was using the internet, it just went off. the second was few days ago when i was watching youtube. the 3rd today when iwas rendering a video in AE. the 4th time was todayand it was just on the desktop i think.

1st and 2nd times i had to remove the internal battery and reset bios to get it to boot. the 3rd time it booted to windows but then went off again so i removed the battery. the 4th time it just booted back up and i didnt need to remove the battery.
 
i believe thats a multi rail PSU.if your trying to power everything on a single rail than that could be your problem.try to spilt the load on the PSU to lighten the load.but IMO i would get a good brand PSU,Corsair,XFX,Antec and SeaSonic are just a few theres more good ones out there.the 5870 is a power hungry card that needs good clean power to run flawlessly,if you upgrade your PSU i believe it will solve your problem,GL!

ps.before you go buying a new PSU let more people come on here and post what they think might be the problem.
 
So it literally just loses power? Shuts off as if you held the power button down?

Delta electronics are okay but mainly for OEM systems, but not powerful systems like you have.

I'd recommend an XFX 650w PSU from www.newegg.com
 
It may well be a power problem but that should only cause a trip. You may have to turn off mains power to reset, depending on the unit, but you should not have to remove the battery to reboot. There could be something else going on.

If it happens again, try turning off the mains for long enough to dissipate energy before turning on. You could also try leaving off long enough to cool down. If you get beeps, note the pattern and post.
 
yeah it just goes off, no warning or anything just boom black screen and nothing. The light on the front of the computer is still on. I was wonder if i was using to much juice could it cause this problem? I know the gpu is power hungry it needs about 350w i believe. but its quite a random problem and when im using the internet it went off, so could it be a faulty psu or maybe a faulty mobo or something. What do you guys think i should check?

Today i render an hours worth of video in AE and then in vegas and it was fine and that was puting it under strain i guess.

i was going to get a 750w psu just to give myself more breathing space.

Like i mentioned a couple of times i had to reset bios to get it to start up again. could i have a corupt bios? I wouldnt even know how to start checking that out or fixing it.
 
i tried counting the beeps but its so damn hard trying to distinguish the short and long ones and there were quite a few beeps.

it's a good brand..

test your PC at another Psu (maybe some friend of you have better psu)
 
There are plenty of power calculators around the Internet (simple to fill in) and at PS vendors. It sounds like you are way under. Using the basic info you provided I got over 600W needed. Very approximate - do it yourself.

Everyone seems to agree you are under-powered. See if that cures all issues.
 
i used a power calculator and i got about 450w of power needed but i may not have input everything correctly. Even so if i need 450w im running close to my max out put. But if you got 600w then my power supply is def not enough. Im looking at this

looks pretty sweet and that will have enough juice. it seems to have one 12v rail with 70a on it which would be better than my starnge multi railed thing i guess.

what do you guys think?

can i also ask does a new psu come with all the same lead and attachment my current one has? so when i change over i just copy what my old psu is attached to.

Fail. That is a rubbish PSU and you need something much better.

Secondly, the PSU may not be the only issue, but it needs replaceing either way.

We need to know the beeps as this will isolate the issue. IT could be the motherboard as well as if it is not returning a 'good' signal to the PSU, it will shut down as you describe.

The 650W mentioned before is recommended.

Lets start from the beginning, it has nothing, repeat nothing to do with wattage. You need to look at 12V rail amperage and quality indicators.

Forget the comment about the rails, thats just not true.
 
Funny thing is that it happened again to day, I heard that the fan was becoming noisy and the pay was making a kind of humming buzz type noise. Then five minutes later it crashed again. It made 8 beeps and they seemed to be of the same length. I ordered the pay in the link above which has 70amps on a single 12v rail so fingers crossed that helps
 
the 8 beeps seem to indicate an isue with the video card. So i removed that and then set it back in just make sure it was put in properly. I have also installed a new psu, a corsair 850w that has a single 12v rail with 70amps. So i will see what happens now, if the video card is the issue then i expect it will crash again and i will have to look into that.
